Forensic Evidence

Traceability and labelling of forensic evidence when investigators work on a crime scene is key in mitigating the risk of evidence getting lost. Once the evidence is collected, labelled and sealed in a tamper evident security bag on a crime scene, the evidence needs to be transported to a SAPS forensic science laboratory in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, or Port Elizabeth for analysis.

Tamper evident security bags have full traceability features like matte white writing blocks for logging or recording purposes, serial numbers and barcodes which can be scanned in at different locations along the journey of the evidence and a tear – off slip with the exact same serial number printed on the label as the one printed on the bag. Cash-In-Transit Bags

Tamper evident security bags are an imperative part of the cash in transit (CIT) chain of custody. The security bags are used as an auditing tool to secure the integrity of the cash handling process and to reduce internal risks of theft.

Tamper evident security bags are marked with unique serial numbers which are recorded in a manifest and checked at every pick-up, transit and delivery point during the cash handling process. Yes, do the test yourself! It is quite impressive. Once you pour liquid into the bag and turn the bag upside down after it has been properly sealed, the liquid will not come out of the bag.

The bag will show clear signs of tampering after the tamper evident bag was opened in ambient temperature. The compromised tamper evident tape cannot be resealed without presenting signs of tampering.

A high-level tamper evident bag has 4 tamper evident features built into the bag and is usually identified by green tamper evident tape used on the bag.

These tamper evident features include signs of tampering after the bag was attacked by Freon/cold spray, liquids such as water, cream, oil, or lotion or after the bag was exposed to conditions above 60°C.
